How can people say insurance companies should be able to deny based on pre-existing conditions?
Let's look at an example.
Bob has a job. He has health insurance. He gets cancer, and his insurance company pays for his tens of thousands of dollars worth of treatments.

The economy goes south, Bob gets laid off. He has to choose between health insurance and losing his house, so he obviously needs to stop the insurance. Later, Bob gets re-hired, and despite the fact that he can afford insurance, he can never get it again, because he has a pre-existing condition.
You have to understand that insurance company are like gamblers in a poker game, they will make a bet that they can make money with the players based on the mathematical probabilities of wining money!

You can be sure that, if they know in advance that they will lose money, they wont bet on you!

Insurance company are like any other business and they have the right to refuse you as a customer. This is why it is a lot better to have a government health insurance plan like we have here in Canada, this way you can be sure to get the medical services for free even if you have to wait a little to get to them.

We do not live in a perfect world, unfortunately. It would have been better for the person in your example to lose the house, that he could have bought back after getting a new job, than losing the health insurance for life because of his condition...

Material is something we can replace, health is another matter. Wink
exdiogene pretty much summed it up. Ethics aside, they are there to make money. They aren't going to make money spending that money when they know they will have to spend it.
